June 10, 2019. Sarah was actually my first interview! I met her in the Visitor’s Information Centre in Hope, BC. She was upbeat, helpful, and was excited to be a part of this project when I asked her:
Are you in love?
“No” was her response. Clear and solid and that was it.
Who has been the most influential person in your life?
Sarah thought for a minute, tipping her head to settle on her person:
“When I was eleven, I was really shy and my parents put me in drama to try and make me more, ugh, more friendly, and the director from that, first thing, she has had a huge influence on my life. I worked with her until I was, I don’t know, twenty-one. She was a person that always believed in me and watched me grow up.”
You can mention her name if you want.
“Joan Meade is her name. I remember–I must have been twelve. I said that I couldn’t do something, and she made me scream, ‘Yes I can,’ out the window for like ten minutes. She really changed my life.”.
How do you feel about the future?
“Uhm, I know it’s hard to think positively about those kinds of things right now, ‘cause you hear a lot of bad news and a lot of really depressing news, but you hear a lot about people coming together as well and you gotta have some optimism that we’ll do our best to get everything together.”
