Carley Willms

August 24, 2019. I had zipped into a mall in Lloydminster, Alberta. I was more than tired–I was ridiculous. I found myself in a Bodyshop buying foot cream. Who does that? Well, I do, apparently. Carley, the sole employee at the time, did her best to make me feel like I was not a lunatic. She was wonderfully non-judgemental and helpful, so I asked her if she felt like responding to a few questions. She jumped in right away. Plus, she helped me find the right foot cream! Win-win, right?

Are you in love?

“I am. We met at twelve, started dating at sixteen, and we’re twenty-three now!”

Who has been the most influential person in your life?

“Oh. That one might take me a couple seconds…is that okay? The most influential person in my life…oh. You know what? Can you say ‘yourself?’ ‘Cause you know what, I feel like I’ve just overcome so much in the past couple of years, and I’m going to say myself–I mean there’s lots of people in my life who I look up to, but…I don’t mean to sound self-centred (she laughs).”

How do you feel about the future?

“The future! That’s a good question. You know what? I’m feeling, uhm, what’s the word I’m looking for? There’s a specific word I’m looking for here. Like…hopeful. Hopeful’s the word! Yeah! Yeah! You know I feel I mean there’s a lot of environmental things going on and a lot of…I mean there’s an election coming up here at the end of the year and I’m just…I’m feeling hopeful that it’ll all turn out good. Yeah.”
